Parents of autistic children for decades have searched out for what may have caused their child's autism. A new study (July 2011) suggests that there may be an association between taking antidepressants like Zoloft, Prozac, Lexapro, Celexa, Effexor and Paxil during pregnancy and a significant risk to the baby being born with autism and autism spectrum disorders(ASDs). A review of medical records of more than 1,800 children, including 298 who have autism, found the risk of having a child with autism spectrum disorder was about twice as high among women who took SSRIs in the year before giving birth.
Recent it has been reported that researchers combed Kaiser Permanente records and found prenatal exposure to antidepressants was reported for 20 case children, or 6.7 percent, and 50 control children, or 3.3 percent. The strongest effect, however, was associated with SSRI treatment during the first trimester - there was a three-fold risk. There was no increased risk found for mothers with a history of mental health treatment in the absence of prenatal exposure to SSRIs.
"The suggested association pairs two combustible controversies - the side effects associated with SSRIs, such as Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil and Celexa, as well as the origins of autism. In recent years, SSRIs have been linked to suicidal thoughts in youngsters and birth defects. In short, they acknowledge that prenatal SSRI exposure is "very unlikely" to be a major risk factor but still a factor that should be considered.
NOTE: The new science linking autism and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and antidepressant usage while pregnant is in its infancy, but with time and more medical studies many believe a strong SSRI austim link will be discovered.Antidepressant Autism Lawsuit
